Dynamic Pile Testing is being extensively used for Delhi Metro Project as a replacement tool for working load tests and to ascertain capacity / integrity of suspect piles. Numerous co-relation studies were conducted to evaluate the test method & acceptability of the test agency. The results were successful and more than 70 tests have been conducted till date. Testing was conducted on 1000mm to 1500mm piles with test loads upto 675 tons.

The entire project consisted of installing approximately 18000 pre-cast piles 350mm x 350mm square and 50m (16m+16m+18m) length at one of the major oil and gas installations in the country. 45 piles were initially driven along the entire stretch and were monitored with High Strain testing both for EOID and re-strike. Few initial piles were co-related with static load tests with encouraging results. Based on the findings, the pile depths were eventually reduced by 2m for almost 15000 piles resulting in direct cost saving of millions to the client. It also reduced the problems in handling the last 18m segment as with reduced length, all the segments were now 16m length each resulting in major savings in time and cost to the client. Numerous piles were monitored during the entire duration of piling and it was a norm to immediately conduct PDA on questionable piles or those that showed unusual penetration record.

Geo Dynamics was engaged to monitor steel piles during End of Drive and Restrike for Cruise Berth Terminal constructed at Mauritius. Geo Dynamics was approved as a testing company by the Port Authority and consultants in UK based on their specific experience in these types of marine jobs. The project consisted of 813mm spirally welded steel pipes to be driven by a Junttan HHK 18A hammer. The first few piles were tested for End of Drive and also restrike tests conducted at the project site. Correlations conducted both for tension and compression piles showed excellent match between the test results. There was major variation in soil stratum and the pile depths varied from 6.5m to 43.6m. Geo Dynamics engineers monitored the piles on regular basis and the test results and analysis provided good confidence to everybody to install piles in such varying depth of stratum.

National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) located 128 piles of 500mm that were abandoned by the previous contractor more than 10 years back. No technical data like pile depth or capacity was available. A combination of dynamic and pile integrity tests was used on the project site. Initially PIT conducted on the piles reported pile lengths about 20m. Borehole taken adjacent to two such typical piles confirmed the findings. Dynamic testing on the pile helped establish its design load. Static test was also conducted by the client on the pile dynamically tested for further confirmation. The static and dynamic test results matched well helping the client save lot of time and money, since most of the piles could be used in further construction at no additional cost.

The project consisted of 4 major flyovers as a part of the road project. High Strain Dynamic Pile Testing was done on 80 r.c. bored piles after conducting three reliability and correlation studies between static & dynamic tests. This resulted in significant savings in time thus helping the contractors and clients. Space availability for static load tests at busy traffic intersections was resolved by adopting dynamic load tests at the project site. Testing was conducted on piles ranging from of 1200mm r.c. bored piles and capacity of upto 875 tons.

The project consisted of nine major flyovers at road intersections and one railway ROB. This was one of the busiest highways in the country and the job involved six laning of the entire stretch of 80 km of the highway from current four lanes. High Strain Dynamic Pile Testing was extensively used for all the bridges and flyovers after conducting reliability and correlation studies between static & dynamic tests. This resulted in significant savings in time and early completion of many bridges and flyovers thus helping the contractors and clients. Space availability for static load tests at busy traffic intersections was resolved by adopting dynamic load tests at the project site and also resulted in more working space and work efficiency for the contractor. Testing was conducted on piles of 1200mm r.c. bored piles and capacity ranging from 270 tons to 1375 tons.

For one of the major real estate projects in Chennai, out of 100 bored piles of 500mm and 750mm for each building few piles showed some distress. Tests conducted by two testing agencies provided conflicting results and the clients were not sure whether to accept or reject the piles. Finally, Geo Dynamics was called to do testing based on their expertise and our team correctly evaluated defects in many piles. These were also exposed for confirmation. Based on the findings, most of the piles for few buildings were rejected and the entire piling was properly redone. Tests conducted on new piles had no problems and the capacity confirmed by high strain and static test results. Low Strain testing proved to be a boon as otherwise it would have lead to dangerous consequences for the developer. Geo Dynamics also proved their expertise in this form of testing. It also proved that integrity testing is a state of art technology and merely trying to conduct 100’s of test at lower price may not be a good choice.

Routine PIT testing on 10 piles for a project in Goa showed defect in 3 piles. Eventually all the 150 piles were tested at the project and the results showed defects in atleast 40 of them. Many results were confirmed by manual excavation. The site was critical chemical plant and helped the client in avoiding major future accident that could have been caused due to pile foundation failures.

For a major pharmaceutical plant in Gujarat, bored piles of more than 400 piles of 900mm were installed. Geo Dynamics was engaged directly by the client to do testing and 40 piles showed defects in the upper shaft around 4m-7m and many others showed short lengths. The local contractor engaged another agency who confirmed almost all the piles as good. Eventually some piles were exposed for depth from 4m to 7m and all of them showed clear defects proving the integrity and capability of Geo Dynamics team.

Integrity Tests have also been routinely used to evaluate possible defects like cold joints, soil inclusions, or to evaluate integrity in case of specific concreting problems on site. It is very important that the agency engaged to do low strain testing understand the types of piles, their behaviour, possible problems that can occur, local conditions before an interpretation is done. It is (ultmost) important that the testing engineer is honest and non under any undue influence as sometimes more than the cost of testing, the entire project may stand risk. It is a risk to the builder or owner, consultant and contractor if major defects are not reported and any disaster may lead to serious consequences for everybody concerned.
